New Delhi [India], May 8 (HBTV): The Fact Check unit of the Press Information Bureau (PIB) has exposed a false video circulating on social media that claimed Pakistan had conducted a strike on a military base in Amritsar, Punjab. The misinformation, spread by Pakistan-based social media accounts, alleged numerous casualties and critically injured individuals at the Amritsar base. The post, shared by a user named Shamil Jawani (@ShamilJawani1), used hashtags like #IndiaPakistanWar, #OperationSindoor, and #Pakistan.
PIB Fact Check debunked the claim, labeling the video as “FAKE” and warning against the spread of unverified information. The video, which accompanied the claim, was identified as an old clip from a 2024 wildfire and had no connection to any military strike or operation.
The PIB issued a statement urging the public to avoid sharing unverified content and to rely solely on official sources from the Government of India for accurate information. The post further clarified, “Pakistan-based handles are spreading old videos falsely alleging strikes on a military base in Amritsar. #PIBFactCheck: The video being shared is from a wildfire from 2024.”
This latest misinformation campaign by Pakistan follows India's precision missile strikes under Operation Sindoor, targeting nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Pakistan has escalated its digital tactics, recycling outdated images, misrepresenting old videos, and creating false narratives in an attempt to divert attention from its own military vulnerabilities.
Another example of Pakistan's disinformation campaign was the viral image falsely claiming that the Pakistan Army had shot down an Indian Rafale jet. This image, debunked by PIB Fact Check, was from a 2021 MiG-21 crash in Moga, Punjab, and was entirely unrelated to the current events.
The PIB continues to advise the public to stay cautious of misleading content and to verify information from trusted, official sources. (ANI)
