New Delhi [India], June 26 (HBTV): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday extended greetings on the occasion of Muharram, saying the sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) continues to inspire people to remain steadfast in the pursuit of truth and justice.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said the occasion serves as a reminder of the enduring values of truth, justice, courage and conviction.
He wrote, 'The sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) continues to inspire many people to remain steadfast in the pursuit of truth and justice. It is also a reminder of the enduring power of courage and conviction.'
Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, reaches its culmination on the 10th day, known as the Day of Ashura. It commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain Ibn Ali and his followers in 61 Hijri (680 CE) at the Battle of Karbala in present-day Iraq.
For Shia Muslims, Ashura is observed as a day of mourning, while many Sunni Muslims observe a fast on the occasion.
The day is marked by solemn processions in which devotees pay tribute to Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who was martyred at Karbala. Participants often express their grief by beating their chests as the processions move through designated routes.
Meanwhile, a large number of Shia Muslims gathered in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on Wednesday to participate in the 8th Muharram procession.
Muharram holds deep religious significance for Shia Muslims. In India, members of the Shia community, along with people from other faiths, participate in Muharram processions and tazia observances across the country.
