New Delhi [India], June 7 (HBTV): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has received a call from Canadian Prime Minister Mark J. Carney, inviting him to attend the upcoming G7 Summit in Canada later this month.

In a post on X on Friday, PM Modi congratulated Carney on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation.

Expressing optimism about the future of India-Canada relations, PM Modi stated that he looked forward to meeting Prime Minister Carney in Canada later this month.

‘Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister @MarkJCarney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month. As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit,’ PM Modi wrote on X.

In April this year, PM Modi had also congratulated Carney on the Liberal Party's election win and expressed hope for enhanced bilateral cooperation.

‘Congratulations Mark J Carney on your election as the Prime Minister of Canada and to the Liberal Party on their victory. India and Canada are bound by shared democratic values, a steadfast commitment to the rule of law, and vibrant people-to-people ties. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our partnership and unlock greater opportunities for our people,’ PM Modi had written on X.

Carney assumed office after taking over leadership from Justin Trudeau, who resigned towards the end of his term following a loss of confidence within his party earlier this year.

Unlike his predecessor, whose tenure witnessed strained India-Canada relations due to allegations surrounding the killing of NIA-designated terrorist Hardeep Nijjar, Carney has taken a conciliatory stance, advocating improved ties. He also extended condolences following the Pahalgam terror attack, signalling a commitment to rebuild bilateral trust.

The G7 Summit is an informal grouping of seven of the world’s advanced economies along with the European Union. The member countries—France, the United States, Germany, Japan, Italy, Canada, and the United Kingdom—convene annually to deliberate on major global economic and geopolitical issues.
