Sukma (Chhattisgarh) [India], May 16 (HBTV): The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on Friday conducted the last rites of a two-year-old Belgian Shepherd named Rolo, who was part of the force’s elite canine squad.

Rolo lost her life after being attacked by a swarm of bees during a major anti-Naxal operation in the Karreguttalu hills on the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border. She was declared dead on April 27, 2025, due to anaphylactic shock caused by around 200 bee stings.

Born on April 5, 2023, K9 Rolo was trained in infantry patrolling, explosive detection, and assault at DBTS in batch sl. No. 80. She was subsequently deployed for anti-Naxal duties with the 228 Battalion, CRPF, in April 2024.

During a special operation at Karreguttalu Hill (KGH), while K9 Rolo and other troops were conducting an intensive search, they were surprised by a sudden attack by a large swarm of honey bees. Handlers attempted to protect Rolo by covering her with a polythene sheet, but the bees infiltrated the cover and stung her repeatedly. In intense pain and agitation, Rolo broke free, making her vulnerable to further stings.

Rolo suffered approximately 200 bee stings and became unconscious. Despite immediate medical evacuation and emergency treatment by the handlers, she succumbed to the injuries en route and was declared brought dead by the veterinarian.

To eliminate Naxalism by March 26, 2026, security forces have been conducting ‘Operation Black Forest’, the biggest ever joint operation by the CRPF and state police near Karreguttalu Hill. The 21-day operation from April 21 to May 11 neutralised 31 Naxals carrying a bounty of INR 1.72 crore.
