Barcelona [Spain], May 16 (HBTV): At least 13 people were injured after a car plowed into a crowd gathered outside a stadium in Spain, where a football match between FC Barcelona and Espanyol was played, according to CNN, citing local authorities.
The Catalan police described the incident as an ‘accidental collision’. In a statement shared on social media, they said: ‘The situation is under control and in no case poses a risk to the people inside the sports facility.’
Catalonia's emergency services confirmed that 13 individuals were undergoing treatment for their injuries.
In a follow-up post, the Catalan police added: ‘The injured people are being treated by emergency services and the driver of the vehicle has been arrested.’ They further noted that a large police presence had been deployed in the area.
Videos shared on social media, geolocated by CNN, appeared to show a white car driving through a crowd in a park adjacent to the stadium. According to a post by emergency services on X, nine of the victims sustained ‘minor injuries’, while four others were in ‘less than serious’ condition.
FC Barcelona won the match 2-0, securing the La Liga championship for the 2024–25 season. The rivalry between Barcelona and Espanyol spans nearly a century and often reflects broader Spanish political divisions, with Catalan nationalists supporting FC Barcelona and Spanish unionists backing Espanyol.
