Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 30 (HBTV): The exits of Germany and the Netherlands from the FIFA World Cup 2026 are not isolated shocks but reflect a growing trend at the tournament, where underdogs are no longer relying solely on defensive resilience and luck but are using tactical discipline to overcome football's traditional powerhouses, according to a release.

Paraguay held Germany to a 1-1 draw before winning 4-3 in the penalty shootout. Germany dominated possession and completed significantly more passes, but Paraguay defended in a compact low block, closed down spaces between the lines and frustrated the German attack.

Despite controlling the ball, Germany struggled to create clear-cut opportunities. Paraguay remained patient, capitalised on key moments and held their nerve in the shootout.

The match highlighted that possession alone is not enough in knockout football. While Germany controlled the ball, Paraguay executed a more effective tactical plan.

Morocco also progressed after drawing 1-1 with the Netherlands before winning 3-2 on penalties. Morocco created several of the better chances despite the Dutch taking the lead. The African side equalised late before looking physically and mentally stronger during extra time.

The performance reinforced Morocco's growing confidence on the world stage, with the team displaying the belief and experience that also carried them to the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The elimination of Germany and the Netherlands, who have contested seven FIFA World Cup finals and won four titles between them, could become one of the defining stories of the 2026 tournament.

The results also underline how the gap between football's traditional elite and emerging nations has narrowed significantly. Teams from Africa, Asia and South America now feature players competing regularly at Europe's top clubs and no longer approach the biggest stage with an inferiority complex.

Several Round of 16 fixtures could produce further surprises. Belgium face Senegal in a contest where Senegal's pace, physicality and tournament experience could test Belgium's ageing squad.

England take on DR Congo, whose athleticism and ability to attack in transition have made them one of the tournament's surprise packages.

Spain meet Austria, whose organised pressing game could disrupt Spain's possession-based style.

Argentina face Cape Verde in what could become one of the tournament's biggest David-versus-Goliath encounters, while Colombia take on Ghana in a match expected to be evenly contested because of Ghana's athleticism and counter-attacking threat.
