Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], July 15 (HBTV): The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Mumbai seized cocaine worth INR 62.6 crores from an Indian woman at Mumbai International Airport, officials said on Tuesday.
According to a statement from the DRI, specific intelligence developed by DRI Mumbai officers indicated that a female Indian national arriving from Doha to Mumbai on July 14 was suspected of smuggling narcotics into the country.
Acting on this information, DRI officials intercepted the passenger upon her arrival at the airport. A thorough examination of her baggage led to the discovery of six Oreo boxes and three chocolate boxes. All nine boxes were found to contain capsules filled with a white powdery substance suspected to be cocaine. A total of 300 such capsules were recovered.
Each capsule was individually tested using a field test kit, and results confirmed the presence of cocaine.
A total of 6,261 grams of cocaine—valued at approximately INR 62.6 crore in the illicit market—was recovered and seized under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The woman was taken into custody, and further investigation is underway.
Earlier, on June 22, DRI Mumbai arrested a male passenger who had arrived from Sierra Leone after seizing 1,139 grams of cocaine, valued at INR 11.39 crore. During questioning, the man admitted to ingesting capsules containing narcotics for smuggling and was admitted to a government hospital.
On June 20, acting on specific intelligence, DRI Mumbai intercepted a Nigerian woman suspected of transporting narcotics from Delhi to Mumbai by bus. The late-night operation involved a 50-kilometre surveillance trail before her baggage was searched.
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence remains at the forefront of India's fight against drug trafficking, playing a key role in intercepting illegal narcotics, dismantling smuggling networks, and upholding national security.
