Imphal, Manipur, September 7 (HBTV): Suspected hill-based militants on Saturday morning shot dead an elderly man who was asleep at a secluded location in Jiribam district of Manipur. The incident took place approximately seven kilometers from Jiribam district headquarters.
Two persons were also killed in a subsequent exchange of fire, police said.
The deceased has been identified as one Kulendra Singha, who lived alone in an isolated house. Taking advantage of the situation, militants entered the house and shot dead him, police said.
Further, a heavy exchange of fire broke out between armed groups of the warring communities the Meitei and Kuki in the nearby hill terrains of Jiribam district. At least two persons have been killed in the gunfight, an official said. The source said more casualties have been reported. The number of dead and injured persons might increase as continuous fighting has been reported since early morning.
Meanwhile, a large mob stormed the Second Manipur Riffles and 7th Manipur Rifles complexes in Imphal West and Imphal East, respectively. Police and Central Reserve Police Force personnel opened fire, launched tear gas shells and fired pallet.
The fracas between the mob and the security forces continued for the entire night. Sources said the mob wanted to loot for weapons from the police armory. At least five persons sustained injuries and have been admitted to JNIMS hospital. So far, there is no confirmed report of arms and ammunitions having been looted from the two complexes.
Schools and colleges in the state have been closed following an order by the Education department. The decision was taken in view of the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
The Committee on Manipur Integrity, a major valley-based organization, called for cessation of works as a protest against the government’s failure to safeguard lives and properties in the state.
Since early morning, main markets in Imphal had been looking deserted.
The educational institutions and business establishments closing down has severely affected normal life in Manipur.
