New Delhi [India], May 6 (HBTV): A 24-year-old woman from Jammu and Kashmir was allegedly molested outside Gate No. 8 of Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi, police officials said.

The incident was initially reported to the Jamia Nagar Police Station after a verbal call was received regarding the alleged misconduct near the university gate.

‘It is submitted that a verbal call was received in PS Jamia Nagar regarding misbehaving with a girl outside Jamia University Gate 8,’ the police stated.

Upon preliminary investigation, the accused, identified as Aabid (22), who works as a cook at the Jammu and Kashmir Hostel Mess at Jamia University, was found to have allegedly molested the complainant while walking on the footpath. The woman, a resident of Okhla Village, was approaching from the opposite direction when the incident occurred.

The accused was detained by the police on the night of the incident. However, the complainant did not give her statement that night, and the matter was kept pending. On the morning of April 28, she provided a formal statement, after which a case was registered under Sections 354 and 354A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Aabid, a resident of Village Bhaisi in Nooh district of Haryana, was arrested in connection with the case, police added.

Earlier that day, police had stated that a mess worker at Jamia Millia Islamia University had been detained for allegedly assaulting a Kashmiri woman student on campus. The alleged incident occurred around 9:30 pm on April 27, when the 24-year-old second-year MA student was allegedly assaulted by Aabid.

‘The accused was detained the same night. The student has not yet filed a formal complaint, but she is expected to do so today, after which an FIR will be registered,’ a police official said. Authorities noted that the altercation appeared to stem from a personal matter.

In response, the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) released emergency helpline numbers and established a dedicated support team to assist affected students and coordinate with authorities.

Separately, 26 people were killed in the recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam area, one of the deadliest since the 2019 Pulwama strike that claimed the lives of 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel.
