New Delhi [India], May 1 (HBTV): The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved the proposal for the development, maintenance, and management of a four-lane greenfield access-controlled high-speed corridor highway from Shillong to Silchar.
According to an official statement, the 166.80 km stretch of National Highway No. 06 from Mawlyngkhung (near Shillong) in Meghalaya to Panchgram (near Silchar) in Assam will be constructed on the Hybrid Annuity Mode at a total capital cost of INR 22,864 crore.
The proposed highway includes 144.80 km in Meghalaya and 22.00 km in Assam.
The greenfield corridor aims to significantly improve traffic movement from Guwahati to Silchar, enhancing connectivity to Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, and the Barak Valley region of Assam. The corridor is expected to reduce both travel distance and time, thereby boosting logistics efficiency across the region.
The project is also designed to spur economic development in Meghalaya and Assam by improving connectivity in industrial zones, especially those involved in cement and coal production. Additionally, the corridor will cater to national and international tourists accessing the region via Guwahati, Shillong, and Silchar airports, promoting tourism by connecting scenic destinations in the Northeast.
The corridor will improve inter-city connectivity among Guwahati, Shillong, and Silchar, and traverse through Ri Bhoi, East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills, East Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya, and Cachar district in Assam. It will also ease congestion on the existing NH-06 and contribute to transport infrastructure development under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan.
The project alignment will integrate with major transport corridors, including NH-27, NH-106, NH-206, and NH-37, offering seamless connectivity to cities such as Guwahati, Shillong, Silchar, Diengpasoh, Ummulong, Phramer, Khliehriat, Ratachera, Umkiang, and Kalain.
Once completed, the Shillong–Silchar corridor will play a pivotal role in regional growth, improving connectivity between Guwahati, Shillong, Silchar, Imphal, Aizawl, and Agartala. It aligns with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, fostering infrastructure development, employment generation, and socio-economic advancement across Meghalaya, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
