Washington DC [US], July 4 (HBTV): US President Donald Trump scored a major legislative victory on Thursday (local time) as the House of Representatives passed his ambitious 'One Big Beautiful Bill' by a narrow margin.
The bill was approved in a 218-214 vote, with two Republicans—Representatives Thomas Massie and Brian Fitzpatrick—voting against it, The Hill reported.
The landmark legislation includes sweeping tax cuts, increased funding for the Pentagon, and expanded allocations for border security. It will now head to President Trump's desk for his signature.
According to CNN, quoting White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, Trump is scheduled to sign the bill at a ‘big, beautiful signing ceremony’ on Friday evening.
‘The one “big, beautiful bill” has passed the House of Representatives and will be at the president’s desk for signature at a big, beautiful signing ceremony tomorrow at 5 p.m. on the Fourth of July, just as the president always said and hoped it would be,’ Leavitt said during a press call shortly after the vote.
Vice President JD Vance, who cast the tie-breaking vote in the Senate earlier this week, acknowledged that there were moments of uncertainty.
‘Congrats to everyone. At times, I even doubted we’d get it done by July 4! But now we’ve delivered big tax cuts and the resources necessary to secure the border. Promises made, promises kept!’ Vance wrote on X.
The Senate had passed the bill on Tuesday with a 51-50 vote, with Vice President Vance breaking the tie. The final tally followed intense negotiations and a 27-hour marathon of amendment votes on the floor, where Republican leaders sought to gain the support of dissenters, The Hill reported.
Despite unified Democratic opposition and defections from Republican Senators Thom Tillis, Rand Paul, and Susan Collins, the bill passed in the Senate. It includes major tax reductions, significant cuts to federal aid programmes, and substantial changes to the country’s energy and immigration policies.
