Agartala (Tripura) [India], May 14 (HBTV): Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Tuesday announced that the overall crime rate in the state has declined by 19.4 per cent in 2024 compared to 2023. He also informed that the state government will soon recruit 916 constables and 218 sub-inspectors for Tripura Police.
Dr Saha made the remarks while attending the Offer of Appointment distribution programme for the post of constable in Tripura Police at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala. A total of 975 appointment letters, including 332 for women and 643 for men, were handed over in his presence.
‘There were many discussions and doubts raised about the recruitment process. But this government delivers on time. Today is a memorable day for those who came to receive their offers. All recipients are here because of their own merit and dedication. No one can claim these jobs were secured through external influence. Our government ensures transparent and merit-based recruitment,’ said Dr Saha.
He also highlighted that from February 12, 2025, till date, infrastructure and development works worth INR 368.21 crore have either been inaugurated or had foundation stones laid across various departments.
‘So far, 17,554 persons have been employed under the die-in-harness scheme. Additionally, around 2.1 lakh entrepreneurship opportunities have been created. We are also focused on improving the quality of education by providing better training to teachers. In 2025 alone, 4,499 individuals have received government job offers. We have implemented a 33 per cent reservation for women in jobs to empower them,’ he said.
Dr Saha, who also serves as the state's Home Minister, added that recruitment of 916 more constables and 218 sub-inspectors has been approved to strengthen police manpower.
‘We aim to reduce the shortfall in police personnel as maintaining law and order is our top priority. The results for the Special Executive recruitment will be announced soon. We are giving a free hand to the police to ensure better law enforcement. Just as Prime Minister Modi gave full freedom to the armed forces during Operation Sindoor to act against terrorists, we are empowering our police,’ he said.
He also addressed concerns over the misuse of social media platforms, warning that strict surveillance is in place and necessary action will be taken against inappropriate activity.
‘We speak only with data. Compared to 2023, the overall crime rate dropped by 19.4 per cent in 2024. In the last four months alone, crime decreased by 10 per cent. Crimes against women are being seriously addressed, with Women Help Desks established in every police station. Road traffic accidents fell by 13 per cent in 2024 compared to 2023, and in 2025 so far, they have declined by 40 per cent. We have zero tolerance towards drug abuse. Narcotics seizures in 2024 rose by around 106 per cent over the previous year, while drug destruction increased by 132 per cent,’ he said.
The event was also attended by Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy, SC Welfare Minister Sudhangshu Das, Tribal Welfare Minister Bikas Debbarma, Cooperation Minister Shukla Charan Noatia, MP Rajib Bhattacharya, MLA and Mayor Dipak Majumder, Home Secretary Abhishek Singh, DGP Amitabh Ranjan, and DG (Intelligence) Anurag.
