Indore (Madhya Pradesh) [India], July 24 (HBTV): A rare and complex medical case has emerged at Government Maharaja Tukojirao Holkar Hospital (MTH Hospital) in Indore, where a woman gave birth to a baby girl with two heads. The child is currently in critical condition, according to doctors.
The woman underwent a cesarean delivery on the night of July 22, as a normal delivery was not possible. The baby weighs 2.8 kilograms and is being treated in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Dr Nilesh Jain, Professor of Paediatrics at MGM Medical College, said: 'The newborn has two heads with a single body, a condition known as conjoined twins. The infant is very critical and experiencing breathing difficulties. There are two hearts — one rudimentary and the other functional, though its structure is abnormal. In such a situation, the chances of survival are very low, and saving the baby is extremely difficult.'
He added that the baby’s condition remains highly critical and that it is not possible to surgically remove any parts due to the complexity of the case.
'The baby is receiving continuous treatment. All necessary arrangements and medical facilities have been provided. However, survival depends on the internal functioning of the organs. If they fail to function properly, the chances of survival are minimal,' Dr Jain said.
He also mentioned that the parents are in a state of shock and efforts are being made to support and comfort them. Speaking about surgical options, he noted: 'Currently, the parents are unable to make decisions. All medical prospects will be presented to them at a later time. We occasionally come across such cases once or twice a year and have performed successful surgeries in the past. But in this case, the paediatric surgeons have confirmed that surgery is not possible due to the placement of the organs.'
Dr Nilesh Dalal, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, stated that the woman, a resident of Dewas district, was admitted to MTH Hospital’s emergency unit after experiencing labour pains. A cesarean-section was performed on the night of July 22, resulting in the birth of a baby girl with two heads — a rare case of conjoined twins.
An MRI will be conducted, and further treatment will follow, though doctors have indicated that the chances of survival remain very low.
He confirmed that the mother is in stable condition, while the newborn continues to receive intensive care in the NICU.
